Heartland Symphony Orchestra Fall Concert Series October 5 & 6

The Heartland Symphony Orchestra will be opening it’s 48th season #OnlyInMN with their Fall Concert Series #Beethoven. HSO will perform the Minnesota premiere of Dr. Dominic Dousa’s New Era Overture. Dr. Dousa has been a member of the faculty at the University of Texas at El Paso Department of Music since 2004. When asked about the piece, Dominic said “UTEP Department of Music Chair Dr. Lowell Graham asked me to write a piece for the UTEP Symphony Orchestra’s first concert of the 2010-2011 academic year. While the piece was written for a specific occasion, it is intended to convey the general spirit of celebration, optimism, reflection, and anticipation that comes with any new era.”

Dr. Stephen Carlson, professor of piano at Bemidji State University, will be featured in a performance of Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto. Dr. Carlson made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2005. He has appeared with the Bemidji and Bismarck-Mandan Symphonies, as well as the Chamber Orchestras of Gustavus Adolphus and Mississippi Valley. In 2017, he performed live on Minnesota Public Radio.

In memory of Mary Anne Bennett, and to thank her for her 21 years of service to HSO, the orchestra will also perform “Nimrod” from Elgar’s Enigma Variations.

HSO’s annual collaboration with St. Francis Music Center’s orchestras will be in Little Falls at Charles D. Martin Auditorium in Little Falls High School on October 5 at 7:30 PM.

This cycle will also include a side-by-side performance with members of Brainerd High School’s Sinfonia Orchestra in Brainerd at Gichi-ziibi Center for the Arts at Brainerd High School on October 6 at 2:30 PM. In Brainerd, there will be a Conductor Chat prior to the concert at 1:45 PM. Little Falls will not be holding a Conductor Chat for this fall cycle.

HSO concerts are free and welcome an audience of all ages. Donations are graciously accepted by mail, at the door, and online at heartlandsymphony.com.

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board and the Five Wings Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. In Little Falls, the Laura Jane Musser Fund provides additional support. The Echo Kowalzek Youth Concerto Competition is funded in part by a grant from Crow Wing Power Community Trust.
